If you are looking for a Central New York wedding photographer who has seen it all, let me tell you, we truly have.
From dreamy garden ceremonies to emotional first looks, wedding days are full of magic. But they are also full of surprises. On the very first episode of the Shoot the Vows podcast, we shared one story that perfectly sums up why we started this show.
It involves a garden wedding, a balcony, and a wasp.
Let’s talk about it.

The Wasp Incident: A Real Garden Wedding Emergency
We love garden weddings. Especially here in Central New York, where summer and early fall weddings are bursting with color. Think lush florals, glowing sunsets over the Finger Lakes, and that soft golden light that makes Finger Lakes wedding photos absolutely stunning.
But no one talks about the bees.
Most of the time, bees are fine. We have gently scooped them off bouquets, veils, and even a groom’s jacket without a problem. But wasps are a different story.
Not too long ago, a bride stepped out onto her balcony before getting ready and was stung in the face by a wasp. Right in the cheek.
Cue the panic.
This is exactly why we always carry an emergency kit. Non drowsy allergy medicine, pain relievers, safety pins, tissues, lash glue, nail clippers. Yes, nail clippers. You would be surprised how often those come in handy.
Wedding days are beautiful, but they are also real life. And being prepared can completely change the outcome of a stressful moment.
Why We Started the Shoot the Vows Podcast
Shoot the Vows started as a simple idea. At first, it felt like a fun extension of our photography business. But the more we thought about it, the more we realized there is a huge gap in the wedding industry.
So many couples in Syracuse and the surrounding CNY area are planning their weddings without a full planner. They book their venue, hire their vendors, pick their dress, choose their colors, and then think… now what?
As a Syracuse wedding photography team, we often step into that planning role on the wedding day. We answer timeline questions. We help bustle dresses. We fix veils. We keep things moving.
We realized, if we already have this knowledge, why not share it?
The podcast is our way of sitting down with you, like friends over coffee, and talking through the things no one else tells you.

Meet the Team Behind the Camera
Hi, I’m Caitlyn.
I accidentally started my photography business after buying a fifty dollar camera at a warehouse. It did not even work. One camera turned into two, then three, and eventually into a full blown love for photographing people.
Weddings became my heart. There is something about engagement season, the planning, the anticipation, and finally the moment when everyone you love is in one place. It is magic.
Hi, I’m Kaylee.
Before photography and videography, I was a florist. I loved the creativity and color, especially during busy wedding weekends across Central New York. But I wanted something faster paced, something that let me capture the full story of the day.
Now, working together as a photo and video team, we bring that energy into every wedding and every CNY engagement session we shoot.
And honestly, couples feel it.

Why Photo and Video Chemistry Matters
If you are planning your wedding in Syracuse or the Finger Lakes, this is something you really want to consider.
Not all photographers and videographers work well together. Different workflows, different personalities, different styles.
And the last thing you want on your wedding day is this:
- The photographer pulling you one way
- The videographer pulling you another
- Everyone talking over each other
- You feeling stressed and confused
When your photo and video team has real chemistry, the day flows. We communicate without over explaining. We step back when the other needs a moment. We work as one unit.
It makes a huge difference in your experience and in the final gallery and film you receive.

Common Wedding Planning Struggles We See in CNY
Planning a wedding in Central New York comes with its own unique challenges. Between unpredictable weather, seasonal venue availability, and coordinating vendors across Syracuse and the Finger Lakes region, it can feel overwhelming.
Here are some common struggles we see:
1. The “Now What?” Phase
Couples book:
- The venue
- The caterer
- The DJ
- The photographer
- The dress
And then they hit a wall.
They do not realize how many small decisions are still ahead. Things like reception flow, first looks, sunset timing for photos, transportation between ceremony and reception sites.
2. Trying to Plan the “Perfect” Wedding
There is no perfect.
If you aim for perfection, you will feel stressed the entire time. The best weddings we photograph, whether at a barn in the Finger Lakes or a ballroom in downtown Syracuse, are the ones where couples focus on connection, not perfection.
3. Not Knowing What Options Exist
For example, we often ask couples if they are doing a first look. A surprising number respond with, “What’s that?”
There are so many creative options:
- Traditional aisle reveal
- First look before the ceremony
- First touch around a corner
- Private vow readings
- Parent first looks
- Group photos to kick off the dance floor
These small decisions shape your entire day.
Wedding Day Emergency Kit Essentials
Let’s talk practical tips.
If you are planning a wedding anywhere in Central New York, especially outdoor weddings in spring and summer, here are things you absolutely want nearby:
- Non drowsy allergy medicine
- Pain relievers
- Safety pins
- Bobby pins
- Lash glue
- Tissues
- Nail clippers
- Small scissors
- Stain remover pen
- Mints
We have used every single one of these at a wedding.
The bustle comes undone. Someone forgets to clip their nails. A boutonniere snaps. A veil needs adjusting. Someone cries and smears mascara.
It is normal. And it is fixable.
